Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Complete Book Three Collection. [As the third season of this Emmy-winning animated series unfolds, Aang
wakes up to two significant surprises: The first is that he's trapped
aboard an enemy ship of the Fire Nation, and the second is that he has
a full head of thick, black hair. Meanwhile, as Aang's fellow prisoners
Katara, Sokka and Hakoda explain the series of events that brought them
to their current circumstances, Prince Zuko journeys home to face his
father. ~netflix]
seriously, if you haven't watched this, you're totally missing out. one
of the best shows EVER. 5 stars! read what steve has to say here.
HBO Presents One Night Stand: Flight of the Conchords.
omg. seriously. i LOVE bret and jemaine. i love their music and their
songs and i laugh and laugh and laugh. they did an acoustic version of
the hiphopotamus vs. the rhymenocerous... best evah! 5 stars.
Red Cliff. [When
a warmongering prime minister (Fengyi Zhang) advances his armies
against two rival kingdoms, he unwittingly prompts his adversaries
(Chen Chang and Yong You) to work together in this martial arts
action-adventure. The ensuing conflict culminates in the epic battle of
Red Cliff, a struggle by the sea involving more than 1 million
soldiers. Director John Woo's big-budget spectacle is based on the
novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. ~netflix]
what a disappointment. why did all the hot dudes look NOT hot? and why
was it so visually stunted. and why so much talking and not enough
fighting?! 3 stars, i guess...
Reprise. [Close
friends Erik and Phillip (Espen Klouman-Høiner and Anders Danielsen
Lie) each await news on their first novel. Only Phillip's is published.
Thinking he's made it big, he's unprepared for fame and the obsessions
and temptations it will bring. He emerges from a nervous breakdown to
discover that Erik has found literary success of his own. This brash
look at art, success, redemption and failure is the debut film of
director Joachim Trier. ~netflix] it's better than the synopsis
makes it sound. obviously, the stars are erik and phillip... phillip's
girlfriend, kari is important to the plot, but mostly everyone else is
just background. if you don't believe me, take steve's word for it. 4 stars.
Shinobi: Heart Under Blade. [It's
X-Men meets Romeo and Juliet in Ten Shimoyama's ninja action thriller.
Gennosuke (Joe Odagiri), from the Koga ninja clan, falls in love with
Oboro (Yukie Nakama), from the rival Iga clan. The tribes are already
exiled to the mountains, but the evil Shogun is intent on eliminating
them. He pits the clans against each other in a duel to the death,
where the ninjas wield their supernatural powers. But will inbred hate
snuff out forbidden love? ~netflix] THIS is what we should've
watched for movie night. and it really is kinda like x-men meets romeo
and juliet. sounds weird, sure, but it's really good. i liked it a lot.
a few of the effects weren't that well done, but some of them were SO
FRICKING SWEET. 4 stars.
Smart People. [An
unexpected romance with a charming former student (Sarah Jessica
Parker) and a surprise visit from his wild adopted brother (Thomas
Haden Church) conspire to turn the life of surly widowed professor
Lawrence Wetherhold (Dennis Quaid) upside down. But after nursing his
bitterness for so many years, is the self-absorbed academic ready for
change? Ellen Page and Ashton Holmes co-star in this witty dramedy from
director Noam Murro. ~netflix] well, this movie is for dumb
people who want to pretend they're smart, i guess. oh, don't get all butt-hurt if you liked it. i'm just saying that it was pretty
average. i almost turned it off in the beginning, but it started
getting slightly better, so i just kept watching it. 2 stars.
Ugly Betty, Season 2. [Golden
Globe winner America Ferrera returns as charming, metal-mouthed Betty,
a lovable Queens, N.Y.-bred assistant working her way up the ladder of
high-fashion magazine Mode.
She's still on a low rung of that ladder, but she has the support of
her boss (Eric Mabius), her dad (Tony Plana) and her sister (Ana
Ortiz). Salma Hayek executive produces the series, which also stars
Vanessa Williams and Alan Dale. ~netflix] oooh, i just *heart*
this show. :D and i love that vanessa williams' bodyguard is rick fox.
that shit just makes me laugh. i totally want her to get together with
Henry. why can't she just get together with Henry?! i have a total
dork-crush on him. :D hehe. 4 stars.

My Friends Tigger & Pooh: Hundred Acre Wood Haunt. [This clever interactive program invites all kinds to join in the fun
with Pooh (the Bear of Very Little Brain), Piglet, Eeyore and the gang
from Hundred Acre Wood as they solve a series of head-scratching
mysteries through fun questions and games. How can nervous Piglet
conquer his fear of thunder and lightning? Will Eeyore restore a piece
of the moon that fell to earth? Children will love this journey of
discovery and wonder. ~netflix] they make it
seem like it's halloween-themed, but it's really not. read steve's
scathing (well, scathing for steve. hehe) review here.

Sasha: Invol2ver. i really loved this album... except for the title. i don't like that "2" in the middle. couldn't they just name it Involver 2? or something? that 2 just bugs me. other than that, i loved it. (okay, on amazon, they have two listings. one as "invol2ver" and the other as "involver 2"... i guess the one listed as "invol2ver" at $18.49 is a limited edition with a second CD. the one listed as "involver 2" is just the regular CD. gosh, so confusing! hehe.) here's steve's review.
Mitch Hedberg: Do You Believe in Gosh?
he is SO damned funny. seriously, i love him. i only wish i could've
seen him live... while it kinda upsets me that they're making money off
of him after he died, i'm glad to be able to listen to some new
material.
.:What I'm Watching:.
21 Up South Africa: Mandela's Children. [The concept of the Up Series -- documentaries that revisit a group of children every seven years -- is brought to post-apartheid South Africa. Here, filmmaker Angus Gibson interviews 11 young people of various races and backgrounds as they turn 21. The result is an insightful look at how they've changed and the issues they face such as crime, race relations, education and the AIDS epidemic -- which has killed three of the original 14 children. ~netflix] inspired by michael apted's UP series. which is AWESOME, btw... i'm sure you could tell by the description, but it's... really depressing and sad. i am looking forward to the next installation, though. it'd be interesting to see how they are doing at 28. although, i don't know. i feel like it'll take a whole lotta work (or a miracle) for some of these people to get out of the situations they're in. 4 stars.

Avatar: The Last Airbender: Book 3, Volume 3. [As the third season of this Emmy-winning animated series unfolds, Aang wakes up to two significant surprises: The first is that he's trapped aboard an enemy ship of the Fire Nation, and the second is that he has a full head of thick, black hair. Meanwhile, as Aang's fellow prisoners Katara, Sokka and Hakoda explain the series of events that brought them to their current circumstances, Prince Zuko journeys home to face his father. ~netflix] seriously one of the best shows ever. it's in its 3rd (and i guess final) season. it is SO awesome. i loooove it. 5 out of 5 stars. also, steve got me a second plushie to go with my appa. it's MOMO!!! :D i love them both. hehe.
The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse. [Royston
Vasey is in danger of being annihilated. The inhabitants must find the
creators of the show in the real world in order to save it.] i didn't like it as much as the other League of Gentlemen shows. it was still good, though. 3 out of 5 stars.
- Living Goddess. [Filmed in Nepal's Kathmandu Valley, Ishbel Whitaker's documentary examines the lives of three girls thought to be reincarnated goddesses whose story unfolds amid the country's political and religious strife. Worshipped by Hindus and Buddhists alike, the three share a common divinity, but while Chanira and Preeti are sheltered from the outside world, Sajani's parents strive to create a normal life for their daughter. ~netflix] this netflix synopsis is totally misleading. first of all, i don't recall there being 3 goddesses. i only remember there being 2. if they did show a 3rd, they sure did her an injustice because i don't know who it's supposed to be. while the subject matter is fascinating, the execution was well... to be honest, not so good... the direction was kinda messed up. screwed with the flow of things. this could've been such an amazing documentary, but instead it just came across as just... ordinary and uninspired. 2 out of 5 stars. mostly for the poor execution.
Made. [In this comedic crime drama -- Jon Favreau's directorial debut -- aspiring pugilist Bobby (Favreau) and pal Ricky (Vince Vaughn) head to New York as representatives of Los Angeles mob boss Max (Peter Falk). Things aren't going well with Bobby's job, his boxing hopes or his girlfriend (Famke Janssen), and he hopes that helping out Max will fix it. But trouble hits when the two meet up with Ruiz (Sean Combs) and the gangsters of New York. ~netflix] it was all right. but vince vaughn's character? i have never wanted to punch a character in the face so many times. i used to like vince vaughn, but the older i get, the more he annoys me.

Kipper: Kipper Helps Out. [Kipper, that agreeable dog with the sunny smile, learns some valuable life lessons in a series of six animated films in which he helps out various friends, both new and old. Episodes include "The Visitor," "Pig's Present," "The Butterfly," "The Bleepers," "Pig's Cousin" and "The Little Ghost," in which Kipper prevails over a fearsome haunted house. Great stuff for toddlers. ~netflix] it's a really gentle cartoon and very sweet. and mia and i really like it a lot. i would definitely recommend this for toddler viewing. 4 out of 5 stars. :)

.:What I'm Watching:.
Knocked Up. [A one-night stand results in an unexpected pregnancy for entertainment reporter Alison (Katherine Heigl) in Judd Apatow's
romantic comedy. Determined to be a good mom and keep her career on
track, Alison decides to try to make things work with the baby's
father, slacker Ben (Seth Rogen).
It's anything but smooth sailing as the odd couple gets acquainted, but
Alison finds there's more to Ben than she originally thought. Paul Rudd also stars. ~netflix]
it was pretty darn funny. we watched the unrated version. i think that
was why we got to see the baby's head crowning. *shudder* i didn't even
want to see my OWN baby's head crowning. i know it wasn't real, but it
was still gross. hehe. i think judd apatow's amazing. lah-lah-love his
work.
Tekkon Kinkreet. [Based on Taiyo Matsumoto's popular manga serial "Black and White," this surreal anime adventure follows two penniless orphans, Black and White, struggling to survive on the mean streets of Treasure Town. When a megacorporation threatens to tear down the town to build an amusement park, Black and White engage in the fight of their life. Directed by Michael Arias, this dazzling tale comes from the creators of Animatrix. ~netflix] really good. confusing at times, but isn't all anime confusing? hehe. we just got the manga yesterday. i know i should read it. but it's really thick and long. (that's what she said! heheh. sorry. couldn't resist that.) i just don't know if i'm going to have the time to read it. i even have LAST month's comics to read. i am behind!
Vacancy. [A young couple (Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson) stranded at an isolated hotel are shocked to find that their room is wired with video equipment -- but their anger turns to terror when they realize that they may become the star attractions in a snuff film. As the two struggle to escape, they find evidence that the murderous filmmakers have been producing these twisted movies for quite some time. Frank Whaley also stars. ~netflix] i don't watch much horror. so this movie kinda freaked me out. i guess in hindsight, it wasn't that scary, but while i was watching it, i was pretty scared. heh. also, it didn't help that i was alone because steve and the boys went to oktoberfest and i was alone. heh. it kept me tense, but for not much payoff. i didn't DISLIKE it. i just didn't think it was great.
and i'm still watching:

.:What I'm Watching:.
Avatar: The Last Airbender, Season 1. [With a crop of new friends, instant celebrity status and the ruthless Fire Nation on his tail, can a 12-year-old boy stay the course on saving the world? In the first book of the Avatar saga, siblings Katara and Sokka discover a mysterious boy named Aang who's been frozen in a block of ice. But the minute they thaw him out -- and the world learns he's the Avatar they've been waiting for -- his destiny takes a dizzying turn. ~netflix] so cute! i really liked it a lot. it's fun and funny. also, the little boy's voice is pablo's voice from the backyardigans. and i love that kid's voice. he's adorable. well, at least his voice is. the netflix description is much more boring than the show really is. hehe.
Dragon Heat. [Jaded lawman Kong Long (Sammo Hung) finds himself the reluctant leader of a ragtag Interpol squad out to capture vengeful terrorist Petros Angelo (Michael Biehn), whose group has kidnapped an infamous crime lord. A war of wills and a blood-drenched urban showdown ensue in director Dennis Lee's kinetic Hong Kong thriller featuring pop star Vanness Wu as a Taiwanese cop and Maggie Q as a sexy Chinese sniper. ~netflix] what.the.hell. i'm still SO confused. yes, i realize that hong kong movies don't typically make sense as far as the storyline goes, but... this one was just retarded. also, what's up with the "sharpshooters?" none of them could even connect. the worst snipers ever. it was just bad. almost bad enough to be good. but not quite. heh. ultimately, it just ended up annoying the crap outta me.
Doctor Who. [More than 15 years after "Doctor Who" went off the air, the venerable sci-fi series got a well-received 21st-century makeover, complete with younger actors, modern editing and CGI animation. In the revamped show's first season, the Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) meets his new sidekick, a department store clerk named Rose (British pop star Billie Piper); then, the duo travels to Victorian England to help a beleaguered Charles Dickens. ~netflix] i've only watched the first disc, but it was fun. i enjoyed it. the special effects are... pretty bad. heh. but it's definitely worth watching. :D also, you may recognize The Doctor as the guy in Heroes who can be invisible whenever he likes. yeah. that guy.
The Jungle Book 2. [It's time to go back to the jungle in this sequel to the animated classic based on Rudyard Kipling's beloved book of the same name. Mowgli (voiced by Haley Joel Osment) is a young man who's developed a crush on a girl named Shanti. But Mowgli misses his old life and, more important, his pals, and returns to the woods to find Baloo (John Goodman). But awaiting his homecoming is his old nemesis, Shere Khan (Tony Jay). ~netflix] so, this movie takes place after mowgli goes to the village. it was... just okay. i was a little disappointed, probably because i loved the first one so much.
TMNT. [Turtle power is back with a vengeance in this slickly animated adventure based on the popular comic books by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird and the live-action film by the same name. This time, New York City is teeming with trouble again, and it's up to Leonardo and the venerable Master Splinter to whip Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo back into shape. ~netflix] i've only watched a few of the tv show episodes and none of the movies, so it's not like i'm some kind of TMNT expert by any means. this was the newest one and i thought it was well done. but what the hell do i know?
Transmorphers. [Three hundred years ago, alien machines landed on Earth, wiping out civilization and driving mankind underground. Now, after three centuries of oppression, a small band of hardened resistance fighters leads the charge to the surface, where the final battle against the giant robots will decide the fate of the world. Amy Weber, Matthew Wolf, Eliza Swenson, Shaley Scott and Griff Furst star in this postapocalyptic techno-thriller. ~netflix] that was exceedingly bad. heh. acting? bad. dialogue? retarded. effects? terrible. but i guess if you're making a movie on a shoestring budget, it wasn't THAT bad. for a while, i turned the volume down so i wouldn't have to listen to the bad script, but then i ended up having to watch the actors "act" and that was even MORE painful. the general or whoever she was... the one who in the movie who has some facial features that resemble angelina jolie's? i think she watches too much porn. because whenever anything would happen, she'd have her mouth open and she'd be breathing all hard so that her chest was heaving. trust me. that is a LOT less hot than it sounds. it was just a bad movie. it brings to mind the matrix and battlestar galactica and starship troopers... and i'm sure about a hundred other sci-fi movies but... it's not as good as any of those. that's right. i said starship troopers was good. in a good b-movie sort of way. anyway, this movie just didn't make the grade. it was pretty painful. but i finished it! and i won't give it a 1-star rating on netflix. i'll give it two. only because i actually finished it. hehe. oh, being the superficial person that i am, i have to say that most of the cast was fairly easy on the eyes. but they weren't that hot. anyway, i think that being KINDA good looking was the ONLY requirement to getting a role in the movie. well, the main guy was all right. but the girls were all BAD. BAD. BAD. OH! and one more thing. don't be fooled by the title. it's really just to get people interested in the movie. okay. i'm done now. hehe. .... okay. wait. i'm not done. i was on imdb reading some of the threads that the director has participated in... he is kinda funny. but he's arrogant. he's got to be so frustrated with some of the dumbasses who just lambast him. i don't particularly agree with some of his political views, but i do agree with him when he says that it's a lot harder to become a director than someone might think. uhm. gosh. who knew that i would go off on this huge rant about this little flick???
